Before there was ever a commercial radio station that catered to the urban community, there was college radio. College radio helped build urban music in Canada to what it is today, and The Real Frequency has made its contributions to this legacy. After over a decade of being on the air, The Real Frequency is one radio show that has stayed true to its grassroots beginnings, by dedicating every component of the show to hip hop culture at its very core. It grew from a humble foundation to becoming one of Toronto’s most loved radio shows.

The concept for The Real Frequency began at York University’s CHRY 105.5FM over ten years ago. Show creator and DJ, Muziklee Inzane paid his dues by hosting an overnight show, before taking command of a primetime evening slot. Arcee, an MC and Hip Hop connoisseur, went from visiting the show as a listener to becoming an active part of the show – he became the quintessential houseguest that wouldn’t leave, and eventually became an integral part of the show. P-Plus, a DJ known throughout the city for playing ‘real’ music, was added to the team in 2001.

When the notorious Saturday afternoon slot on CKLN became available in April 2001, the team faced the difficult task of maintaining the popularity of a show that had been on air for over 15 years. The Real Frequency is one of the few college radio shows that has stayed true to hip hop culture by maintaining loyalty to rap music, while staying away from songs deemed too commercial. At the same time they are faithful to the groundwork laid by their predecessors, by supporting the true MCs and DJs that contribute to Canadian hip hop culture. The Power Move/ Fantastic Voyage slot was a major force in the development of Canadian Hip Hop. Legends have not only touched the microphone, but the turntables as well; needless to say, they were not easy shoes to fill. However, after being in the celebrated slot for four years, the trio has managed to make it their own; proving themselves to diehard fans while gaining new ones along the way.

In 2005 The Real Frequency will make history yet again by becoming the first all Hip Hop show on Canada’s first commercial urban radio station, FLOW 93.5FM. While keeping the basic elements similar to the foundation on which the show was built, The Real Frequency will no doubt keep listeners on their toes and tuned in. The Real Frequency guarantees to use the same ingredients that propelled them from being just the average radio show to an institution for Canadian Hip Hop.

Witness history in the making on FLOW 93.5FM, Monday nights from 11PM to 1AM.
